Man, what an absolute journey In Mourning delivered with "Monolith"! This Swedish melodic death metal masterpiece came out as their second album in January 2010, and holy shit, it's been crushing souls ever since. With improved production quality and artwork by Travis Smith (the genius behind Katatonia, Opeth, and Bloodbath covers), In Mourning shaped their sound into something even more powerful and cohesive than their previous work.

The real magic happens in how they seamlessly transition from death metal to delicate melodic interludes within the same song, making it all feel like one continuous whole rather than random pieces thrown together. The guitars shift from chugging, condensed assaults to slower, more melodic passages reminiscent of Opeth, while vocals change between mid-paced black metal snarls to deeply emotional growls and clean vocals. Songs are deceptively long - clocking in at six or seven minutes when you think it's only been 3 or 4 - with tracks like "The Poet and the Painter of Souls" exhibiting smart composition that moves seamlessly between parts. While the beginning takes an upbeat, hard-hitting approach, things gradually shift toward doom metal territory as the album nears its close.
