Background information about 'MMXVII - MMXVIII'
Abyssal Vacuum deal in the kind of black metal that feels less like a genre exercise and more like a slow descent. "MMXVII - MMXVIII" gathers the band's earliest recorded output, and what strikes you first is how fully formed the vision already is. The guitars are cold and razored, the drums push forward with a relentless, almost hypnotic pulse, and the vocals sit buried somewhere beneath the mix like something trying to claw its way out. It is raw, yes, but never sloppy — there is real craft in how these six pieces breathe and collapse into one another.
What makes this collection stick is its patience. Nothing here rushes to a payoff. Tracks build through repetition and texture, letting dissonance accumulate until the whole thing feels genuinely oppressive. There is a bleakness to it that never tips into self-parody, and a sense of atmosphere that rewards repeated listens — you keep finding new details in the murk. For anyone who treasures the more introspective, trance-inducing end of the black metal spectrum, this is a document worth owning on wax.
