Angine De Poitrine
Angine De Poitrine emerged from the remote French-speaking region of Saguenay–Lac-Saint-Jean in Québec in 2023, formed by two musicians who had been playing together since age 13. Operating 180 kilometers north of Québec City in the sparsely populated mountains, Khn de Poitrine (guitar, bass, synthesizer, loop station) and Klek de Poitrine (drums) developed their unique approach to experimental math rock through years of isolated collaboration in their mountainous rehearsal space.
The band's signature anonymity originated as what they described as an "Andy Kaufman-esque trick" played on their local audience. To perform twice at the same venue, they appeared once as their known band and once masked in distinctive black-and-white polka-dotted costumes with oversized papier-mâché masks. This initial jest evolved into a deliberate artistic choice, creating an unmistakable visual identity that extends to their entire stage design. Their triangle hand gesture became a cult phenomenon, reciprocated by audiences at live performances.
Musically, Angine De Poitrine combines experimental math rock with microtonal elements and complex rhythmic structures. Khn performs on a custom-built double-neck hybrid instrument crafted in 2023, connecting a Fender Stratocaster-style guitar with a Fender Precision Bass. Both necks feature additional microtonal frets, requiring over 150 hours of handcraft by a local luthier. Oversized phosphorescent fret markers compensate for the visual restrictions imposed by the mask. Khn operates a barefoot-controlled loop station to build layered compositions, while Klek's drums are covered with black cloth to darken their tone and maintain the visual aesthetic.
The international breakthrough arrived in 2026 following their performance at Festival Les Transmusicales de Rennes. KEXP's live session recording from December 2025 garnered over 9 million YouTube views, propelling the Canadians into global recognition. Shows in New York, London, and Rennes sold out rapidly, prompting additional European dates for late 2026 due to overwhelming demand. Critics praised their originality, technical proficiency, and distinctive visual identity.
Their predominantly instrumental compositions utilize custom tuning systems and complex rhythmic patterns that challenge conventional rock structures. The band's approach to performance art through music has established them as unique voices in the contemporary experimental rock landscape.
