Glenn Danzig has never been one to play it safe, and "Circle Of Snakes" proves that even in the mid-2000s, the man still had plenty of venom left. Released in 2004, this album sees Danzig diving deeper into the murky, blues-drenched waters he's been navigating since the early days, but with a grit and swagger that feels refreshingly raw. From the moment the title track kicks in with its sludgy, slow-burning riff, you know you're in for a ride that's equal parts doom, blues, and that signature Danzig croon – part Elvis, part Lucifer, all attitude.
The production here is leaner and meaner than on some of his more polished outings. Tracks like "SkinCarver" and "Without Light, I Am" rumble with a primal energy, driven by pounding drums and bass lines that feel like they're crawling out of a swamp. Danzig sounds utterly possessed, his voice switching from a sinister whisper to a full-throated roar. There's a hypnotic, almost ritualistic quality to songs like "1000 Devils Reign" that grabs you by the throat. It's not trying to be the next "Mother" – it's something darker, leaner, and far more dangerous. A seriously underrated slice of heavy rock from a true icon.
