Background information about 'Altered State'
Defiled return with their ninth studio offering, and "Altered State" proves these Tokyo death metal titans haven't just survived the genre's evolution – they've transcended it entirely. This isn't your typical old-school worship or modern brutality clone. These Japanese masters have crafted something genuinely unsettling, a sonic metamorphosis that feels like death metal beamed from another dimension.
Opening with the disorienting "Dazed in Blindness", the album immediately establishes its otherworldly credentials before the title track unleashes its controlled chaos. Songs like "Portal" and "Obsession" showcase the band's ability to weave traditional death metal DNA into something completely alien yet utterly compelling. The shapeshifting grooves and tempo shifts don't just change – they unlock doorways to darker realms of consciousness. Artwork by the legendary Wes Benscoter perfectly captures this descent into madness, while tracks like "Necro-Force" and "Apocalyptic End" deliver the kind of precision brutality that only comes from decades of perfecting the craft.
