Talk about overlooked — God Macabre are quite possibly the single most underappreciated gem to crawl out of the Swedish death metal underground. Recorded way back in 1991 at the legendary Sunlight Studios under the watchful eye of Tomas Skogsberg — the man behind the boards for Entombed, At The Gates, and Amorphis — The Winterlong sat unreleased until 1993, and even then it barely made a ripple. That's a damn crime, because what we have here is pure, unadulterated Stockholm-style death metal with that unmistakable buzzsaw guitar tone, cavernous growls, and a sense of melody lurking beneath the murk that elevates these songs far beyond mere genre exercises.

This fully remastered reissue breathes new life into tracks like the gut-punching "Spawn of Flesh" and the mournful "Ashes of Mourning Life," revealing just how ahead of their time these guys were — the doom-laden passages and eerie melodic undercurrents practically predicted the direction bands like Katatonia and early Paradise Lost would take. But wait, there's more: the reissue packs four bonus tracks, including the band's original 1990 7″ demo under their previous moniker Macabre End, plus the previously unreleased "Life's Verge" — the first new God Macabre recording in over two decades.
