Background information about 'Home'
There is a moment on "Home" where the guitars stop circling and simply hang in the air, cold and enormous, and you realise Grand Harvest have found something genuinely their own. The Swedish outfit's second full-length takes the blackened death metal of their debut and drags it somewhere leaner, hungrier and far more direct. The riffing is heavy enough to leave a dent, but it is the melodies that stay with you — long, mournful lines that feel like wind moving through a northern forest at dusk. Nothing here is decorative. Every tremolo run, every slow descending phrase has a job to do.
What really lifts this record is the way it thinks. The lyrics circle around the Angel of Death, around death's own holiness, around the strange idea of dying as coming home to the most beautiful homestead you will ever know. That could easily turn pretentious. Instead, singer Dr. Häll sells it with a vocal range that swings from a gravel-throated growl to something almost fragile, and the arrangements follow him note for note. Tore Stjerna's mix is dark, dense and gloriously intense, and it suits the band's quicker pace perfectly — this is a record that moves, that pushes forward instead of wallowing.
The whole thing lands like a statement. Faster than the debut, darker than you expect, and packed with melodies that sneak up on you long after the needle lifts. Grand Harvest sound like a band who finally know exactly what they want to be.
