When a bunch of kids from Frankenmuth, Michigan, plug in and crank it up, something ancient and gloriously loud comes roaring back to life. "From The Fires" is the second EP by Greta Van Fleet, and it lands like a thunderclap — eight tracks that swagger, strut and sweat, built on riffs that feel like they were pulled straight out of a 1971 amplifier that never got the memo to cool down. Josh Kiszka's voice cuts through the mix with a wail that could shatter glass, while his brothers lay down grooves so greasy you can practically smell the patchouli.
There is real chemistry here, the kind you cannot fake in a studio. The band moves as one organism: the rhythm section locks in tight, the guitars snarl and shimmer, and the whole thing breathes like a live show captured at three in the morning. Highlights come thick and fast — the strutting opener "Safari Song", the brooding "Edge Of Darkness", and a take on Sam Cooke's "A Change Is Gonna Come" that dares to stand toe to toe with the original. It is bold, it is brash, and it is utterly irresistible.
