Background information about 'Extinct'

There is a moment about forty seconds into the opening track where Moonspell stop being merely a great gothic metal band and become something closer to a séance. "Extinct" is the Portuguese outfit operating at a level of confidence that borders on arrogance, and honestly, they have earned every ounce of it. Fernando Ribeiro has never sounded this commanding, his baritone shifting from a whisper to a roar without ever losing that theatrical, almost liturgical gravity that has defined the band since the Wolfheart days.

What makes this record such a thrill is how unapologetically melodic it is. The title track slithers along on a riff that would make Sisters of Mercy jealous, while "Medusalem" drags Middle Eastern scales into a gothic metal framework with a swagger that should not work — and absolutely does. There is a lush, cinematic quality to the production here, all shimmering keyboards and cavernous drums, yet it never buries the songs. Tracks like "The Last of Us" and "Funeral Bloom" prove that Moonspell can still write a chorus you will be humming days later, dark and seductive in equal measure.

By the time "La Baphomette" closes things out, you realize you have been on a proper journey — one that balances the band's extreme metal roots with their enduring love of grand, gothic drama. This is the sound of a veteran act refusing to coast, and it is glorious.
