Holy hell, what a way to kick off the grindcore revolution! "Scum" stands as one of the most influential and downright ferocious debuts in extreme metal history. Napalm Death basically invented a whole new subgenre with this 1987 masterpiece, cramming 28 tracks of pure sonic violence into just over 33 minutes. The album's legendary opener "You Suffer" clocks in at a blistering 1.316 seconds, making it possibly the shortest song ever recorded, while tracks like "Instinct Of Survival" and "Siege Of Power" showcase the band's ability to blend punk's raw energy with metal's crushing heaviness. The production is intentionally raw and chaotic, perfectly capturing the DIY ethos that would define grindcore for decades to come.

What makes "Scum" truly special is how it bridges two distinct eras of the band - the first half features Justin Broadrick (later of Godflesh) and Nicholas Bullen, while the second half introduces Bill Steer (Carcass) and Lee Dorrian (Cathedral).
