Background information about 'Aedes Aquilae'

Anders Ragnar doesn't build worlds so much as he lets them seep through the cracks. On "Aedes Aquilae", the man behind Örnatorpet reaches back to the moment before dungeon synth even had a name, when keyboards and atmospheric interludes were smuggled into black metal records like secret doors. You can hear that lineage in every swelling chord here, but what he does with it is entirely his own.

The shadow of Mortiis, Summoning and Old Sorcery hangs over these eight pieces, and the grand, suggestive sweep of old symphonic black metal gives everything a sense of scale that feels genuinely ancient. Yet this is not a record that shouts. It drifts. Tracks like the opening "A Dominion Without Horizon" and "In Buried Skies, I Dream" settle into a space somewhere between dark dungeon music, fantasy synth and medieval ambient, full of buried skies, distant halls and horizons that refuse to end. The melodies are simple, almost hymnal, and that's exactly why they lodge themselves so deep.

What keeps it from being mere nostalgia is the solitude running underneath. Beneath all the grandeur sits the same solitary impulse that has guided Örnatorpet from the start: the wish to escape the present through atmosphere alone. No irony, no shortcuts, just a candle, a keyboard and a very old imagination. It's the kind of record that makes a room feel bigger and older than it is.
