Background information about 'Cycle of the Dying Sun (Dawn of Ashen Realms)'
Runemagick don't need an introduction to anyone who's ever let Swedish death metal rattle their bones, but with "Cycle of the Dying Sun (Dawn of Ashen Realms)" they sound like a band that has crawled back from the crypt with something to prove. This is doom-soaked death metal of the highest order — riffs that lumber like ancient stone giants, a low-end that feels like it's pulling the floor out from under you, and a suffocating atmosphere that never lets up for a second.
What hits you first is the sheer weight of it. Runemagick have always understood that true heaviness isn't about speed, it's about tension and release, and here they stretch that tension to the breaking point. The title track alone is a masterclass in patient, crushing songwriting, building from a slow-burning dirge into a full-blown maelstrom. The production is raw but warm, the kind of sound that feels like it was recorded in a damp cellar with the amps turned far past what's sensible. It's ugly, it's beautiful, and it's unmistakably Runemagick.
For anyone who thought this band had said everything they needed to say decades ago, this record is a glorious reminder that some fires simply refuse to die. It's death metal as ritual, as catharsis — the dying sun never sounded so alive.
