Some records just smell of damp earth and old VHS tapes, and "The Lupine Anathema (And Other Bloodcurdling Tales Of Horror And The Macabre)" by The Grotesquery is exactly that kind of beast. Kam Lee, the man whose growl helped define a whole school of death metal, is at the microphone here, and he sounds like he is narrating a campfire story that has gone badly, gloriously wrong. Around him, Rogga Johansson lays down riffs thick as swamp fog, Johan Berglund anchors everything with a bass tone you can feel in your teeth, and Brynjar Helgetun keeps the whole thing lurching forward like something with too many legs. This is death metal built on werewolf lore, Lovecraftian winds and bayou nightmares, and it never once apologizes for it.

What makes this album such a joy is how unashamedly it leans into its own mythology. Tracks like "Under The Curse Of The Full Moon" and "The Faceless God" swing between galloping old-school riffing and genuinely eerie atmospheric passages, while the short instrumental interlude "The Lupine Anathema - The Advent Of The Werewolf" works like a cold hand on the back of your neck before "The Faceless God" tears the door off its hinges. "The Beast Of The Bayou (Night Of The Rougarou)" is pure midnight-in-the-swamp menace, and the closing "Bloodcurdling Tales" stretches out past five minutes to let the dread really settle in. It is pulp horror rendered in blast beats and tremolo picking, and it is enormous fun.
