A Conspiracy Of Stars is the sound of a veteran band refusing to coast. Phil Mogg's voice carries that unmistakable worn-in warmth, half storyteller, half barroom philosopher, and Vinnie Moore answers every line with a guitar tone that is pure silk and steel. The songs breathe: "The Killing Kind" opens with a swagger that could fill an arena, "Run Boy Run" kicks into a gallop that reminds you these guys invented a whole vocabulary of twin-guitar hard rock, and "Ballad Of The Left Hand Gun" slows things down just enough to let the drama land.

What makes this record so rewarding is the balance. "Sugar Cane" and "Precious Cargo" show the band's knack for melody without ever going soft, while "The Real Deal" and "Messiah Of Love" bring the kind of chorus you find yourself humming days later.
