Background information about 'Eclipse'
Xandria have always had a taste for the grand gesture, and "Eclipse" is where that appetite finally swallows the whole sky. The Germans built their name on sweeping symphonic metal, but this record sounds like a band that stopped decorating their songs and started living inside them. Opener "Syzygy" creeps in on a hush before the guitars and strings lock into that unmistakable Xandria gallop, and from there it is one cinematic turn after another. The title track lands like a thunderclap, all choirs and crunch, while "Colours" proves they still know how to write a hook that burrows in and refuses to leave.
What makes "Eclipse" so rewarding is the balance. There is plenty of orchestral pomp here, but the band never lets the drama smother the melody. "The Grand Delusion" shifts gears with a brooding mid-tempo sway, "Northstar" reaches for the kind of chorus that begs to be screamed back at a festival, and "The Poetry of the Real World" closes the ride with genuine melancholy rather than easy triumph. The production is huge but never sterile, letting the low end breathe under all those layers of keys and vocals. It is symphonic metal made by people who clearly still get goosebumps at their own crescendos.
