Background information about 'Opale'
There is a moment on "Opale" where the guitars simply stop trying to be guitars and turn into weather — a slow, glowing front of light rolling over a cold landscape. Alcest have always been masters of that particular trick, the one where shoegaze shimmer, black metal's distant rumble and something almost liturgical melt into a single, aching sound. This little seven inch is the purest distillation of it: one song, no filler, no room to hide.
The title track drifts in on clean, chiming arpeggios before the low end opens up underneath, warm and enormous, like standing in a doorway while the rain hammers the roof. Neige's vocal sits high and soft in the mix, half whispered, half sung, carrying a melody that refuses to leave your head days later. It is gorgeous and slightly heartbroken at once, the kind of tune that makes a grey afternoon feel cinematic. And then there is the B-side — no music at all, just an etching pressed into the vinyl, a silent little secret you only discover by looking at the record itself. That kind of detail is why people still buy physical records.
Pressing details are as tasteful as the music: black vinyl, 500 copies, gone before you know it. If you have followed this band from the metal-adjacent shadows into their widescreen dreamscapes, this is a lovely, compact piece of their story to hold in your hands.
