Rotten Casket
Rotten Casket emerged in 2019 from the border region between the Netherlands and Germany, conceived by guitarist and founding member Frank Bergesson. What could easily be mistaken for another all-star consortium is in fact a focused, standalone entity: vocalist Martin van Drunen (Asphyx, ex-Pestilence), drummer Stefan "Husky" Hüskens (Asphyx), guitarist Yorck Segatz (Sodom), and bassist Patrick van der Breek (Disabuse/Born Infected) bring decades of extreme metal pedigree to the table, but Rotten Casket operates as a singular, crushing force rather than a side project.
The band's sound draws from the primal well of late-80s and early-90s Death Metal – think Autopsy, early Asphyx, and the filthier end of the Swedish scene. After establishing themselves with three independent EPs (among them the highly acclaimed First Nail in the Casket EP in 2022), Rotten Casket delivered their debut full-length Zombicron. Recorded, mixed, and mastered at Tom Meier Studios in Enschede (NL) – the same hallowed ground where Asphyx and Soulburn captured their signature heaviness – the album is a ten-track descent into rotting, riff-driven devastation.
Thematically, Zombicron unfolds as a concept piece: the Deathless Hordes hunting down the last survivors on a dying planet. Musically, the album alternates between lurching doom-laden passages and ferocious blast-beat assaults, held together by van Drunen's unmistakable vocal delivery – a guttural trademark that needs no introduction to anyone familiar with extreme metal's upper echelons. The artwork by Toderico Arts and layout by Phil Jonas complete the package with appropriately morbid visuals.
What sets Rotten Casket apart is the chemistry. Despite the members' extensive resumés, there is no sense of disjointed collaboration. The riffs lock in with mechanical precision, the rhythm section operates as a single entity, and the songwriting avoids the trap of mere genre regurgitation. Zombicron feels alive in its decay – a record that breathes, lurches, and strikes with intent. Available now as CD, limited vinyl, and digital formats.
