Rotten Sound
Rotten Sound emerged from Vaasa's underground in 1993, evolving into one of extreme metal's most enduring forces. Guitarist Mika Aalto founded the band while Keijo Niinimaa seized the microphone shortly after, creating a partnership that has defined Rotten Sound for three decades within Finland's grindcore circuit.
The early albums Under Pressure, Murderworks and Exit established Rotten Sound as pioneering architects of grindcore. Their fusion of classic D-beat punk with Swedish death metal forged a distinctive sound that remains a genre blueprint today. Drummer Sami Latva completed the lineup in 2004 after Kai Hahto departed to found Wintersun, bringing stability to Rotten Sound's rhythmic foundation.
The transition to Season of Mist in 2012 marked a new chapter for Rotten Sound. Since then, the band follows a proven formula: each full-length album spawns a concise EP statement. This strategy manifested perfectly with Apocalypse (2023) and the subsequent Mass Extinction EP. Both works originated from identical sessions, mixed at Rain City Recorders and mastered by Brad Boatright.
Rotten Sound function as political dissectors, anatomizing societal decay with surgical precision. Mass Extinction tackles toxic consumerism and labor exploitation within ten brutal minutes. Niinimaa's vocals remain uncompromisingly direct: "We want to be straight to the point. Napalm Death and Nasum have done longer albums, but our thing is concise statements." This philosophy positions Rotten Sound as essential chroniclers of apocalyptic times.
