Background information about 'Mental Funeral'
Autopsy's "Mental Funeral" stands as one of death metal's most uncompromising and influential masterpieces. Released in 1991, this album captures the band at their most visceral and inventive, blending crushing doom passages with blistering death metal fury. The San Francisco legends crafted something truly special here - a record that feels like a descent into madness itself, with Chris Reifert's unhinged vocals and drumming leading the charge through a labyrinth of surgical precision and chaotic brutality.
From the opening assault of "Twisted Mass of Burnt Decay" to the haunting title track finale, this album never lets up in its relentless pursuit of sonic extremity. The guitar work of Danny Coralles and Eric Cutler weaves between punishing riffs and eerie, atmospheric interludes that showcase the band's unique ability to create genuine horror through music. Tracks like "In the Grip of Winter" and "Robbing the Grave" have become genre-defining classics that continue to influence death metal bands decades later.
