Background information about 'The Grand Leveller'

The Grand Leveller is where Benediction planted their flag in the swampy soil of British death metal and dared anyone to pull it out. Originally unleashed in 1991, this record still reeks of sweat, cheap rehearsal rooms and the kind of low-end rumble that makes floorboards complain. Barney Greenway's roar is pure gravel and spite, but there is a groove underneath all that filth — a swinging, almost punkish swagger that separates these Midlands veterans from the blastbeat crowd. Listen to "Graveworm" and try not to nod along; the riff is a bulldozer with a sense of humour.

What makes this one special is the balance. "Jumping At Shadows" lurches with a doom-laden menace, "Opulence Of The Absolute" tightens the screws, and the title track stomps around like it owns the place. The rhythm section is a brick wall, the leads are dirty and mean, and the whole thing sounds like it was recorded in one sweaty take because, honestly, that energy is the point. This 2026 edition comes with an updated vinyl master and artwork rebuilt from the original first press, restoring the pictures and details that later reissues quietly dropped. It looks as good as it sounds — glossy, black-flooded and properly heavy in the hand.
