There are reissues, and then there are resurrection jobs like this one. Pungent Stench never asked for permission, and "Been Caught Buttering" remains the moment the Austrian trio decided that death metal could be filthy, funny and genuinely dangerous all at once. Originally let loose in 1991, it is a record built on lurching, downtuned riffs, drums that swing as much as they bludgeon, and a vocal delivery that sounds like it was recorded in a slaughterhouse basement. The band's black humour runs through every groove, but do not mistake the jokes for weakness: the playing here is razor sharp, and the songwriting has a sick, memorable hook at the end of nearly every riff.

What makes this album endure is its refusal to pick a lane. One minute it is crawling doom, the next it is thrashing at full pelt, and somehow the whole thing hangs together as a single, grimy statement. The bass tone alone is worth the price of admission, thick enough to lean on, and the guitar work slides between classic death metal tremolo and something closer to dirty rock'n'roll. It is the sound of a band that knew exactly how absurd and how heavy extreme music could be at the same time.

This Hammerheart Records edition brings the album back to the shelves where it belongs, and for anyone who missed it the first time around, there is no better place to start. Play it loud, play it twice, and try not to grin at the sheer audacity of it all.
