Background information about 'Der Untergang / Победа!!!'
Cirith Gorgor have always been one of those Dutch black metal outfits that never quite got the credit they deserved, and "Der Untergang / Победа!!!" is the record that makes that oversight feel almost criminal. Originally issued on gatefold LP back in 2011 and finally landing on CD in 2014 via Ketzer Records, this is the band at their most theatrical and most punishing at the same time. The whole thing plays like a funeral march stretched across three movements, and once that opening "Intro" starts rolling you already know you are not getting out of this one unscathed.
The album is built around the "Der Untergang" triptych, and each part gets its own interlude to breathe — a smart move, because the actual songs are towering, riff-drenched slabs of second wave worship with a distinctly Teutonic, almost Wagnerian sense of drama. "Der Untergang, Pt. I" grinds forward with that cold, hypnotic tremolo work the Dutch scene does so well, while "Pt. III" stretches past the nine minute mark and never once loses its grip. The production is raw but never muddy, letting the guitars cut through with real bite. It is grandiose, it is grim, and it is genuinely thrilling.
