Background information about 'Heathen Cross'
When a band that helped forge the New Wave Of British Heavy Metal decides to go back to its roots, you sit up and listen. Cloven Hoof have done exactly that with "Heathen Cross", and the result is a record that feels like a torch being carried back into the crypt where it was first lit. Lee Payne and his crew have openly chased the spirit of their 1984 debut, and you can hear it in every riff: the same occult menace, the same theatrical swagger, but sharper, heavier and meaner than anything they have done in decades.
The real story here, though, is the man behind the microphone. Enter Harry "The Tyrant" Conklin, and suddenly everything clicks into place. His voice is a force of nature, shifting from a low, conspiratorial growl to a sky-scraping scream without ever losing control. Tracks like "Do What Thou Wilt", "Sabbat Stones" and "The Summoning" are built for that kind of delivery, all galloping twin guitars, thundering drums and a rhythm section that refuses to let up. Payne himself calls it his favourite Cloven Hoof album, and honestly, it is hard to argue with him.
For fans of: Satan, Angel Witch, Jaguar, Grim Reaper, Tokyo Blade
