Background information about 'Heathen Cross'
There is something deeply satisfying about a band that refuses to mellow with age. Cloven Hoof have been hammering out their brand of British steel since the early eighties, and "Heathen Cross" proves the fire still burns as hot as it did back in the day. This is heavy metal in its purest, most unapologetic form: galloping riffs, twin-guitar harmonies that could slice through concrete, and a vocal delivery that sounds like it was forged somewhere between a thunderstorm and a sermon. The band leans hard into their occult and mythological obsessions here, and it suits them perfectly.
What makes "Heathen Cross" such a joy is how confidently it wears its influences without ever feeling like a nostalgia trip. The songwriting is sharp, the choruses are built to be shouted back by a packed club, and there is a genuine sense of menace running underneath the whole thing. Tracks like "Do What Thou Wilt" and "Curse Of The Gypsy" summon that classic NWOBHM spirit, while the band still finds room for darker, more brooding passages that keep you on your toes. It is the sound of veterans who know exactly what they are doing and are having a blast doing it.
