Maryland's stoner rock juggernauts Clutch deliver their eleventh studio offering "Psychic Warfare" with the swagger and precision of a band that's mastered their craft over two decades.This October 2015 release through their own Weathermaker Music label takes a similar path to their acclaimed "Earth Rocker" while turning in a slightly different direction. The album opens with the spoken-word intro "The Affidavit" before launching into the driving force of "X-Ray Visions" wherethe chorus "Psychic warfare is real" inspired the album title.Frontman Neil Fallon proves himself a masterful storyteller, or as he calls it, "a professional liar", weaving tales that range from paranoid narratives to mythological references throughout tracks like "Firebirds!" and "Behold The Colossus".The album showcases potent amounts of energy, tasteful homages to classic rock, and numerous infectious melodies with impeccable production tones. Producer Machine (who also worked on "Pure Rock Fury") brings out the best in the band's rhythm section, particularlythe bass and drums that really stand out, with killer bass lines and amazing drum work from JP Gaster. The centerpiece"Son of Virginia" serves as a tour de force finale, about twice as long as any other track making the most of all seven plus minutes.The album cements their position as one of the greatest rock contemporaries, serving as a logical continuation of Earth Rocker while revisiting sounds from fan favorite Blast Tyrant, rounded off with healthy doses of blues and funk.
