Background information about 'Nola'

Some records don't just arrive — they land like a ton of bricks dropped straight through your floorboards. "Nola" is exactly that kind of record. When Down crawled out of the swamps of New Orleans in 1995, nobody was quite ready for what these five guys had cooked up. Phil Anselmo, Pepper Keenan, Kirk Windstein, Jimmy Bower and Todd Strange — a supergroup in the truest sense, but without a single ounce of the pretension that usually comes with that label. This is sludge, doom and southern groove fused into something that reeks of whiskey, humidity and hard-won wisdom.

From the very first crushing riff of "Temptations Wings", you know you're not getting polished radio rock. You're getting a band that sounds like it was born in a dive bar and baptized in feedback. "Lifer" swings with a menace that most metal bands would kill for, while "Stone The Crow" remains one of the most emotionally devastating tracks the genre has ever produced — pure heartache wrapped in a wall of downtuned guitars. And then there's "Bury Me In Smoke", a thirteen-minute funeral march that closes the album like a slow, inevitable sunset over the bayou. This is music you feel in your chest, not just your ears.
