Background information about 'Nola'

There are supergroups, and then there's Down. When Phil Anselmo, Pepper Keenan, Kirk Windstein, Jimmy Bower and Rex Brown got together in the mid-90s, nobody expected what came out of those New Orleans sessions. But "Nola" — the record's title a loving nod to their hometown — turned out to be one of the most vital, swamp-soaked slabs of heavy music ever committed to tape.

This isn't some polished, overproduced side project. This is five friends digging deep into the sludge, the blues, the Southern rock heritage and the pure, unadulterated weight of a riff that just won't let go. From the opening stomp of "Temptations Wings" you know exactly where you stand: neck-deep in molasses-thick grooves, Anselmo's voice swinging between a wounded howl and a full-on roar. "Lifer" and "Pillars of Eternity" hit like a freight train, while "Stone the Crow" is simply one of the greatest heavy rock anthems ever written — that riff is eternal. And then there's "Bury Me in Smoke," the closing epic that feels like a slow descent into the bayou, thick, humid and utterly devastating.

What makes "Nola" so special is its honesty. It's not trying to be the heaviest, the fastest or the most technical. It just grooves with a swagger and a soul that most bands spend entire careers chasing. The chemistry between these five legends is palpable in every single note, and nearly three decades later the album still sounds absolutely massive. If you've never let this record swallow you whole, you're missing one of the essential pillars of modern sludge and Southern metal.
