Background information about 'Ellenbogengesellschaft'

Ellende have never been a band to rush things, and "Ellenbogengesellschaft" proves that patience pays off in the most devastating way. Ten years into their existence as an internationally established live act and studio project, mastermind L.G. and drummer P.F. have forged their seventh record and fourth full-length into something that feels less like a collection of songs and more like a slow-burning fever dream. The Austrian outfit's take on atmospheric black metal has always leaned into the cinematic, and here the songwriting — all of it shaped by L.G. between 2018 and 2021 — carries a weight that's genuinely hard to shake.

What makes this album hit so hard is the sheer density of its craft. L.G. handles everything from electric and acoustic guitars to bass, piano, synths, samples and ambience, layering choirs and vocals into vast, sorrowful architectures. The drums, tracked by P.F. through Markus S. at Klangschmiede Studio E, anchor the whole thing with a raw, human pulse. Guest vocals from J.J. of Karg and Harakiri for the Sky on "Ruhelos" add an extra layer of desperation, while "Verletzlich" draws inspiration from Irish painter Francis Bacon — a fitting nod to an artist who knew a thing or two about beautiful anguish. The oil paintings and artwork, also by L.G., complete a package that feels genuinely whole.
