Hulder didn't so much arrive as claw their way out of the Belgian soil, and Godslastering: Hymns of a Forlorn Peasantry is the moment the project stopped being a tape-trading secret and became something genuinely formidable. Originally unleashed in 2021, this debut full-length takes the raw, demo-era ferocity and builds it into something architecturally richer — the same medieval darkness, but now with depth, texture, and a confidence that lands like a gauntlet thrown at the feet of modern black metal.

What makes this record so gripping is the way it breathes. Tracks like "Upon Frigid Winds" and "Creature of Demonic Majesty" come at you with stripped, blast-driven intensity where the guitars bite and the atmosphere thickens like frost on stone. But then Hulder pulls back — acoustic guitar passages, medieval keyboard lines, unhurried melodies that don't soften the edge so much as give the darkness room to settle into your bones. "De Dijle," named after the river that runs through the band's native Mechelen, roots the whole affair in a specific geography: the Belgian lowlands as a source of folklore, ancient continuity, and the kind of darkness that doesn't need theatrics. The album's structural high point, "A Forlorn Peasant's Hymn," opens in ethereal clean vocals before fracturing into corrosive black metal — a contrast that works because the songwriting earns every shift. The production carries exactly the right amount of haze: full enough to let each element breathe, raw enough to keep those underground roots audible. Mark Riddick's cover art and Liana Rakijian's photography seal the package with a visual identity as stark and considered as the music itself.
