There is a moment on "Suspended" where a hushed Fender Rhodes figure suddenly buckles under the weight of a widescreen riff, and from there Messa simply refuse to let go. "Close" is the Italian quartet's third full-length, and it lands like a slow-motion avalanche: Sara's colossal voice riding over Iommi-grade guitar crush, Arabian oudh threading through the smoke, saxophones and blast beats colliding at the climax. It has been called "Stevie Nicks fronting Black Sabbath," and honestly, that tag barely scratches the surface of what happens here.
What makes this record so thrilling is how effortlessly it moves. "Dark Horse" and "Rubedo" build into almost limitless crescendos of discord and harmony, while "Pilgrim" and "Orphalese" stretch the band's cinematic palette into Mediterranean tapestries that feel genuinely new. Then "0=2" and "If You Want Her To Be Taken" arrive and remind everyone that Messa can write a heavyweight Doom Rock anthem with the best of them. The production is warm, wide and patient, giving every texture room to breathe before the next wave hits. This is the kind of album that rewards a full, uninterrupted listen on a good stereo, with the lights low and nothing else demanding your attention.
