MOONSPELL · Sin/Pecado | BLACK TAPE

Black music cassette.

Background information about 'Sin/Pecado'

Sin/Pecado is where Moonspell stopped being merely a great gothic metal band and became something far stranger and far more interesting. Coming off the lush, cathedral-sized drama of Irreligious, Fernando Ribeiro and company didn't just repeat themselves — they tore the blueprint up and rebuilt it around hypnotic loops, whispered electronics and riffs that grind like rusted machinery. The guitars of Ricardo Amorim and Pedro Paixão trade the usual gothic shimmer for something dirtier and more industrial, while Ribeiro's baritone drifts between a sermon and a confession. It's a record that smells of sweat, incense and cheap red wine, and it absolutely refuses to behave.

What makes it endure is the sheer nerve of it. "2econd Skin" slithers with a seductive groove, "Eurotica" flirts with dancefloor blasphemy, and "Let The Children Cum To Me..." is as confrontational as its title suggests — a deliberate provocation from a band who knew exactly what they were doing. Elsewhere, "Magdalene" and "The Hanged Man" pull the mood back toward candlelit melancholy, giving the whole thing a strange, uneasy balance. This is the sound of a Portuguese band at their most fearless, willing to alienate the purists in order to find something genuinely new. Three decades on, it still sounds like nobody else's record.
