Tales Of Sorcery And Death is where Nightbearer first bared their teeth, and years later it still bites hard. The Westphalian crew dropped this debut full-length back in 2019, and from the opening bars the mission statement is brutally clear: a sawing HM-2 guitar tone that sounds like a chainsaw dragged through a swamp, drums that never let up, and riffs stacked so tight you can barely breathe between them. What lifts it above the usual old-school worship is the songwriting. Axeman Dome already had an ear for the grand gesture, slipping virtuosic, almost melodic lead work between the carnage, and that tension between blunt force and genuine craft is exactly what made this band a name worth remembering.

The centerpiece remains "Lycanthropic Death Squad," a filthy, galloping headbanger that has stayed in the live set ever since, and rightly so. It's the kind of track that makes a room move as one, all snapping snare and razor-wire tremolo. But the record isn't a one-trick beast. There's a real sense of atmosphere running underneath the violence, a cold, nocturnal mood that hints at where the band would push their sound on later releases. For a debut, the confidence is almost absurd. Nothing here feels like a first attempt; it feels like a band who already knew precisely what they wanted to sound like and simply refused to compromise.
