Background information about 'Aedes Aquilae'
Long before anyone bothered to name dungeon synth, those eerie keyboard interludes tucked between black metal tracks were already opening doors to other worlds. Örnatorpet walks straight through one of those doors on "Aedes Aquilae", and what waits on the other side is vast, cold and strangely beautiful. Anders Ragnar builds his towers from the same stone as Mortiis, Summoning and Old Sorcery, yet the record never feels like a museum piece. There is real motion here, a sense of climbing toward something enormous and half-forgotten.
The palette is wonderfully old-fashioned in the best way: glowing synth choirs, slow martial pulses, melodies that seem to drift down from a cathedral ceiling nobody has swept in centuries. Old symphonic black metal lends the whole thing its scale, that grandiose sweep of frozen grandeur, while the quieter passages lean into medieval ambient and fantasy synth without ever turning twee. Tracks like the opener set a tone of endless horizons, and by the time the final fanfare arrives you genuinely feel like you have travelled somewhere. It is solitary music, made by one person chasing atmosphere as a way out of the present, and that loneliness is exactly what makes it hit so hard.
For fans of: Mortiis, Summoning, Old Sorcery, Burzum-free dungeon synth, early Wongraven
