Background information about 'Icon'
"Icon" stands as Paradise Lost's most commercially successful and arguably most accessible album, marking a pivotal moment in the band's evolution from doom-laden gothic metal pioneers to mainstream rock contenders. Released in 1993, this masterpiece showcased the Halifax quintet's ability to craft memorable hooks without sacrificing their signature melancholic atmosphere. The album's opening salvo "Embers Fire" immediately establishes the band's refined approach, blending Nick Holmes' newly accessible clean vocals with crushing yet melodic guitar work that would influence countless bands in the years to come.
What makes "Icon" so compelling is how seamlessly Paradise Lost managed to retain their gothic sensibilities while embracing a more radio-friendly sound. Tracks like "True Belief" and "Remembrance" demonstrate the band's knack for writing anthemic choruses that stick in your head for days, while deeper cuts such as "Colossal Rains" and "Shallow Seasons" maintain the brooding intensity that made their earlier work so captivating. The production is crisp and powerful, allowing every element to breathe while maintaining the weight necessary for their heavier moments.
For fans of: Type O Negative, Anathema, My Dying Bride, Katatonia and The Cult
