PARADISE LOST · Medusa | VIOLET LP

Transparent violet vinyl, standard cover.

Background information about 'Medusa'

Thirty years into a career that helped invent a whole genre, Paradise Lost did the most Paradise Lost thing imaginable: they turned the doom dial all the way back up. "Medusa" is the sound of a band remembering exactly where they came from, and loving every miserable second of it. Nick Holmes growls like a man who has been saving up grievances for a decade, while Gregor Mackintosh's riffs move at the pace of tectonic plates — slow, heavy, and utterly inescapable. Opener "Fearless Sky" takes its sweet time before the hammer drops, and when it does, you feel it in your chest.

That's the trick here: this isn't doom as a gimmick, it's doom as a homecoming. "Gods Of Ancient" and "From The Gallows" trade gothic shimmer for pure Sabbath-worship weight, and the title track "Medusa" slithers along on a riff so greasy you can practically smell the rehearsal room. "Blood And Chaos" brings the tempo up just enough to remind you these veterans can still bite, while "The Longest Winter" and "Until the Grave" close things out with the kind of bleak grandeur that made this band legends in the first place. The production is thick and warm, letting every low end rumble breathe without ever turning muddy.

It's a record that respects the past without becoming a museum piece, and honestly, it's one of the most convincing late-career statements the British doom scene has produced. Play it loud, play it slow, and let the weight settle in.
