There are records that split a fanbase down the middle and refuse to be forgotten, and Spheres is exactly that kind of album. When Pestilence dropped this thing back in 1993, the death metal purists didn't know what hit them. Gone were the bulldozing riffs of Consuming Impulse and Testimony of the Ancients — in their place came a bizarre, forward-thinking fusion of death metal, jazz fusion and progressive weirdness that still sounds like nothing else on the planet.

Pestilence had always been restless, but Spheres was a full-blown leap into the unknown. Patrick Mameli's guitar work is drenched in those strange, off-kilter synth textures and fusion-style runs that made this record so divisive. The rhythm section of Jeroen Paul Thesseling on fretless bass and Marco Foddis behind the kit is absolutely locked in, grooving through odd time signatures with a fluidity that most tech-death bands today would kill for. Tracks like Mind Reflections and The Level of Perception are pure, hypnotic weirdness, while Soul Search and Voices from Within show a band completely unafraid to follow their muse wherever it leads. This remastered edition finally gives the album the sonic clarity it always deserved, letting those alien textures breathe.

The story behind Spheres is as fascinating as the music itself — the band dissolved shortly after its release, and this record became something of a cult relic, endlessly debated and rediscovered by new generations. Listening back now, it's hard not to hear how far ahead of its time this was. The fusion elements that felt alienating in the early 90s now sound prophetic, a blueprint that countless progressive death metal acts would quietly draw from for decades.
