Background information about '...Like Clockwork'
...Like Clockwork is the sixth studio album from Queens of the Stone Age, and it hits like a sledgehammer wrapped in velvet. Recorded after frontman Josh Homme's harrowing recovery from a near-fatal surgery, the record carries a weight that feels both personal and universal. From the ominous, creeping opener Keep Your Eyes Peeled to the devastating piano ballad The Vampyre Of Time And Memory, this is QOTSA at their most emotionally exposed — yet still unmistakably them. The riffs are there, the swagger is there, but there's a vulnerability lurking underneath that makes every track feel like a confession.
The album features an all-star cast of collaborators including Dave Grohl on drums, Elton John on piano, and Alex Turner of Arctic Monkeys, yet it never feels like a guest-heavy vanity project. Instead, every contribution serves the song. Tracks like My God Is The Sun and Smooth Sailing deliver the gritty, desert-born rock fans crave, while I Appear Missing and the stunning title track close the record with cinematic grandeur. It's a masterpiece of tension and release, darkness and light, and it remains one of the most compelling rock records of the 2010s.
