Background information about 'Khronos'

There are albums that mark the end of an era, and then there's Khronos — a record that feels less like a conclusion and more like a ritual closing of a circle. Rotting Christ, the Greek black metal institution founded by the Tolis brothers back in 1987, delivered this beast in 2000, and now Season of Mist has done the right thing by giving it the reissue treatment it deserves.

Recorded during the dead of a Nordic winter at Sweden's Abyss Studios, Khronos carries that cold in its bones. The production is darker, more subdued than its predecessor Sleep of the Angels — the keyboards are pushed back, the guitars bite harder, and the whole thing breathes a kind of shadowy atmosphere that's hard to shake. Tracks like \u201cThou Art Blind\u201d and \u201cAeternatus\u201d hit with a ferocity that recalls the band's early days on Thy Mighty Contract, all raw aggression and blastbeats. But then you've got \u201cMy Sacred Path,\u201d \u201cArt of Sin,\u201d and the title track, where that gothic-tinged melodic intelligence takes over — dark wave currents running underneath slower, more hypnotic structures. And the closer \u201cGlory of Sadness\u201d stretches past eleven minutes before dissolving into an industrial-tinged hidden passage, as if to signal that a door was about to close on this chapter. It's neither a return to roots nor a continuation — it's something stranger and more considered, sitting right in the uncomfortable space between.
