Some bands take the long road, and Serpent took the longest one they could find. Rising out of Stockholm's underground metal scene back in 2000, the band spent the better part of a decade carving out a small but fiercely loyal following through six demo tapes that traded hands in the tape-trading underground like contraband. Now, after all that patient, grim work, comes the debut full-length they have been threatening us with for years: "The Pit And The Pendulum". And it lands with the weight of a cathedral door slamming shut.

This is occult melodic death metal done the old way, and done right. Razor-sharp guitar work cuts through dense, mournful melodies, while the rhythm section keeps everything locked in a vice grip of pure melodic death metal intensity. The album drags the listener along on a dark pilgrimage through hidden rites and forbidden necromantic practices, right up to the nightmarish vision of Edgar Allan Poe's Spanish Inquisition, rendered in the towering title track with crushing force and architectural grandeur. From there it only gets bleaker: "Der Hexenjäger" puts you face to face with Matthew Hopkins, the most notorious witchfinder in history, before dropping you into the hysteria and bloodshed of the Salem witch trials of 1692. The record closes as the Black Death sweeps across Europe between 1347 and 1351, an unstoppable shadow extinguishing light, hope, and life in its path. Epic, suffocating, and utterly gripping.
