Background information about 'Requiem for a Village'
Steven Wilson has never been a man content to sit still, and "Requiem for a Village" finds him chasing yet another shadow down yet another corridor. The record moves with the patience of someone who has spent decades learning how silence can hit harder than a wall of guitars — hushed piano figures, breathy textures, and melodies that seem to arrive from a room you thought you had already left. There is grief here, but it is the dignified kind: the grief of a place changing shape, of streets that no longer recognise the people who grew up on them.
What makes it land so hard is the craft. Wilson writes like a novelist who happens to think in chord voicings, and every arrangement choice feels deliberate, never decorative. When the drums finally open up, they do not explode so much as exhale, and the payoff is enormous precisely because he made you wait for it. Fans of his solo work will recognise the fingerprints — the autumnal melancholy, the obsession with memory and loss — but this one feels leaner, more focused, less interested in proving anything. It simply sits with you.
