Background information about 'Requiem for a Village'
There is a particular kind of hush that settles over a Steven Wilson record, and "Requiem for a Village" carries it like a held breath. The man who has spent decades rebuilding progressive rock in his own meticulous image turns his attention here to memory, to the slow erosion of places and people, and to the strange comfort of watching it all happen. It is a record that rewards patience: let the opening passages drift past you, and suddenly you are somewhere else entirely, somewhere with rain on the windows and a melody you swear you have known your whole life.
What strikes hardest is the restraint. Wilson has never been shy about grand gestures, but here the grandeur is in the details, a muted piano figure, a bassline that walks rather than runs, a vocal that sounds like it was recorded at four in the morning in a room nobody else has entered. The production is immaculate without ever feeling clinical, warm analog textures rubbing up against modern clarity. Longtime collaborators bring their usual telepathy, and the arrangements breathe in a way that makes the double LP format feel not like indulgence but like necessity, room for these songs to unfold at their own pace.
It is a beautiful, melancholy, deeply human piece of work from an artist still operating at the peak of his powers. For fans of: Porcupine Tree, Opeth, Anathema, Riverside, No-Man.
