Background information about 'The Halls of Eternity'

Some records don't just survive the decades, they grow teeth. The Halls of Eternity first landed in 1999, right when Norwegian black metal was busy reinventing its own mythology, and Ancient answered with something that felt both feral and strangely elegant. Led by multi-instrumentalist Aphazel and armed with the unmistakably fierce rasp of Deadly Kristin, the band carved out a sound that refused to sit still: tremolo-picked fury one minute, cold gothic atmosphere the next, all of it wrapped in a production that still smells of candle wax and frozen forests.

What makes this album such a landmark is the balance. The riffs on "Born In Flames" and "The Battle Of The Ancient Warriors" hit with real venom, yet there's melody buried in the chaos, a sense of drama that keeps pulling you deeper. Then comes the title track, a near ten-minute sprawl that lets the keyboards breathe and the guitars spiral, and you realize this isn't just aggression for its own sake, it's storytelling. Ancient understood that the best extreme metal is built on tension, and here they stretch it until it snaps.

Back On Black have resurrected the whole thing as a clear vinyl double LP, and honestly, this is how the record deserves to be heard, spread across four sides with room to loom. It's a snapshot of late-90s extremity at its most ambitious and cohesive, and it still sounds like nothing else in the room.
