Background information about 'The Halls of Eternity'

Some records don't just survive the decades, they keep growing teeth. "The Halls of Eternity" first landed in 1999, right when Norwegian black metal was busy reinventing its own rules, and Ancient used that moment to build something that still sounds gloriously out of step with everything around it. Led by multi-instrumentalist Aphazel, with Deadly Kristin spitting venom and velvet in equal measure, the band welded raw melodic black metal to gothic atmosphere and let the whole thing breathe. It's ambitious, it's theatrical, and it never once apologizes for it.

What makes this one stick is the balance. Tracks like "Cast Into Unfathomed Deeps" and "Born In Flames" come at you with cold, sharpened riffing, while "A Woeful Summoning" and the title cut drag you into something slower, stranger and far more haunted. The keyboards don't decorate here, they haunt the corners of the mix. Deadly Kristin's vocals are the secret weapon, a presence that flips between a snarl and a whisper and makes the whole record feel like a ritual you wandered into by accident. Late-90s extreme metal rarely got this cohesive, and even less often this memorable.

Back on Black has resurrected the album properly, and hearing it again is a reminder of how much personality this band had when everyone else was chasing the same frostbitten template. Essential for anyone who likes their black metal with drama, melody and a real sense of the macabre.
