There are records that sound like winter, and then there are records that feel like they were forged in it. Hulder's sophomore full-length Verses in Oath belongs firmly in the second camp — a record conceived during the deepest, darkest months of a Pacific Northwest winter, and you can hear every frozen breath, every rain-lashed night in its marrow.

Ten tracks across forty minutes, and not a single one wasted. Where the earlier releases hinted at something special brewing, Verses in Oath delivers on that promise with the kind of confidence that only comes from an artist who knows exactly what they want to say and precisely how to say it. The guitars are a towering wall of low-end thunder, tremolo lines slicing through the mix with a melodic sensibility that never once softens their intent. And the synths — here's where it gets really interesting — are woven into the very fabric of the songs rather than draped over them like some afterthought. They're atmospheric depth charges, not window dressing.

The centrepiece, "Hearken the End," is where everything clicks into place: a waltz-paced, almost trance-inducing ritual where clean vocals open into controlled ferocity without a single seam showing. The title track surrounds it with layered guitars and drum work that serves the song rather than showboating. The two interludes — "Lamentation" and "An Offering" — are genuinely meditative breathing spaces, strange and beautiful, before the record reasserts its grip with the closing stretch. Mixed by Ahti Kortelainen at the legendary Tico Tico Studio in Finland, the production lets every element carry its weight without compression crushing the dynamics that give the writing its character. This is black metal that understands atmosphere isn't about burying everything in reverb — it's about knowing when to strike and when to let the silence do the work.
