Background information about 'To The Bone'
Steven Wilson has never been a man content to stand still, and "To The Bone" is the sound of him throwing open the windows and letting a whole lot of daylight in. Where "Hand. Cannot. Erase." was a widescreen meditation on isolation, this record swaggers. There is prog muscle here, sure, but it is filtered through art pop, glossy synth textures and a very deliberate love letter to the ambitious, slightly strange pop records of the late eighties. Wilson wears those influences proudly, and the result is his most immediate, most colourful set of songs to date.
The craft is staggering. Choruses arrive like they have always existed, the arrangements are dense with detail yet never cluttered, and the production is immaculate, warm and three-dimensional. There is genuine bite underneath the polish too, a sharp-eyed look at belief, denial and the stories we tell ourselves, delivered with a wink rather than a lecture. It is a record that rewards headphones, but it also works loud, in a car, with the windows down. That balance is far harder to pull off than it sounds.
