For nearly three decades, Sunn O))) have been pushing the boundaries of heavy music, bridging avant-garde and rock worlds to create something instantly recognizable as their own. This self-titled tenth album marks their Sub Pop debut and first collection of new material since 2019's acclaimed "Pyroclasts". What emerges is a masterclass in space and time manipulation, light and shadow interplay that shows the duo ready to evolve their unmistakable sound into bold new territories.

Recorded at Bear Creek Studios in Woodinville, Washington with producer Brad Wood (Hum, Tar, Sunny Day Real Estate), the forest setting proved crucial to the creative process. The expansive recording room's large windows overlooked towering trees, allowing O'Malley and Anderson to wander the woods and spend time outdoors between sessions. This natural environment breathes through every moment of the album. Rather than featuring their usual roster of collaborators, the duo discovered new possibilities within their original format, playing all instruments themselves. The compositions are sprawling and panoramic yet richly detailed, reflecting their tree-lined surroundings. Amid howling feedback and icy grinding, surprisingly tender moments emerge: field recordings of trickling water, piano interludes creating hushed, ceremonial moods. The album is visually framed by two paintings from late American artist Mark Rothko, with liner notes by award-winning British writer Robert Macfarlane.
