Background information about '1985'
When Talas rolled into the studio to cut "1985", they were a band with something to prove and the chops to do it. Fronted by a young Billy Sheehan — already a bass player's bass player, all flying fingers and fat, growling tone — the trio played hard rock with a metallic edge that sat somewhere between the arena-sized hooks of the era and the sweatier, hungrier club circuit they came from. This is the sound of a group that knew exactly how good they were and wanted you to know it too.
The songs hit fast and they hit hard. "Inner Mounting Flame" opens with a riff that grabs you by the collar, "I'll Take The Night" struts with a chorus built for a packed room, and "Crystal Clear" shows off the kind of instrumental interplay that only comes from thousands of hours on stage together. There's grit in the vocals, snap in the drums, and that restless, low-end thunder that made Sheehan a legend long before anyone outside Buffalo had heard his name. It's heavy metal with a wink and a swagger, played by guys who genuinely loved what they were doing.
For fans of: Van Halen, Y&T, Riot, Loudness, early Dokken
