There are records that crawl under your skin from the very first second — and then there's Reflections in Darkness, the latest offering from New York's black metal coven Throaat. This is not an album that politely asks for your attention. It grabs you by the throat and drags you through nine tracks of raw, unrelenting darkness that feels both ancient and alarmingly present.

From the opening ritual of \u201cBurning the Ice\u201d, Throaat establish their dominion over a sound that bridges the primal fury of first-wave black metal with the eerie, cavernous atmosphere of the underground's most uncompromising corners. There's a palpable nastiness here, a filth-encrusted guitar tone that sounds like it was exhumed rather than recorded, while the vocals howl and sneer with genuine conviction. But don't mistake this for mere primitivism — beneath the grime lies songwriting that knows exactly when to lock into a hypnotic groove and when to spiral into chaos. \u201cAlive inside of the Pentagram\u201d is a masterclass in this tension, a track that burrows into your skull and refuses to leave.

The album's second half deepens the nightmare. \u201cThe Bells of Newcastle upon Tyne\u201d introduces an unexpected, almost gothic melancholy that shows Throaat are far more than one-dimensional blasphemers. The one-two punch of \u201cTormentia\u201d and \u201cTormentia II\u201d closes the circle, a sprawling descent that leaves you battered and strangely exhilarated. This is black metal as it was meant to be: dangerous, mysterious, and utterly alive.
