Background information about 'Sumerian Cry'
Tiamat's debut album "Sumerian Cry" stands as a monumental piece of Swedish death metal history, showcasing the band's raw intensity and mythological fascinations that would define their early career. Originally released in 1990, this crushing opus captures the band at their most primal and ferocious, delivering nine tracks of unrelenting brutality that helped establish Sweden as a death metal powerhouse. The album's title track serves as both opener and closer, creating a cyclical journey through ancient darkness that feels both ritualistic and utterly devastating.
The production maintains that classic early 90s rawness that death metal purists absolutely worship, with Johan Edlund's growls cutting through the mix like a blade through flesh. Tracks like "In The Shrines Of The Kingly Dead" and "Apotheosis Of Morbidity" showcase the band's ability to blend crushing riffs with atmospheric elements that hint at their later gothic evolution. The mythological themes run deep throughout, with references to ancient Sumerian culture and occult imagery that give the album its distinctive character among the Swedish death metal scene.
