There is something deeply satisfying about a band refusing to coast. UFO had already written their legend long before "A Conspiracy Of Stars" landed, yet this record plays like a group with everything still to prove. Phil Mogg sounds magnificent here, that lived-in rasp wrapping itself around every line like he has lived each one twice, and Vinnie Moore answers him at every turn with lead work that is flashy when it needs to be and tasteful when it matters more. This is hard rock with real craft behind it, the kind of album that rewards a second and third spin.
The songs do the heavy lifting. "The Killing Kind" opens with a swagger that sets the tone immediately, "Run Boy Run" and "Sugar Cane" dig into greasy, blues-tinged grooves, and "Devil's In The Detail" shows just how sharp this lineup could be when the hooks and the riffs arrived together. The deluxe reissue sweetens the deal with two bonus cuts, the punchy "King Of The Hill" and a rare instrumental take on "Devil's In The Detail", giving longtime followers something genuinely new to sink into. It is a late-period triumph that deserves far more attention than it usually gets.
